ART & DESIGN EXHIBITION BRINGS TOGETHER STUDENTS

FROM ASEAN COUNTRIES FOR FIRST TIME

1.         Members of the public will be treated to a visual feast of art and design works of student artists from the ten ASEAN countries at an exhibition showcasing art and design education in ASEAN. This is the first time that ASEAN students are participating in a public exhibition organised by the Ministry of Education (MO E). More than 100 pieces of art and design works by ASEAN students from the primary to junior college level will be exhibited.

2.         Held in conjunction with the inaugural ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting and the South-East Asian Ministerial Education O rganisation (SEAMEO ) Conference, the art and design exhibition is entitled Colours of Southeast Asia. The exhibition at the Tropics Atrium of Suntec City Mall will be officially opened on 23 March 2006 by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education.

3.         The works showcase the talents and achievements of the students. They also highlight the creative processes, multitude of forms and varieties of media which the students are exposed to. The art works on display feature an array of diverse traditional and contemporary art media, from the more traditional paintings, batiks and ceramics, to jewellery design and computer-aided animation. The design works on display are creative solutions to problems in the area of design & technology. Visitors will be able to view creative designs by students, such as a uniquely-designed camera stand, a mechanical gadget for better control of a bicycle and a conceptual design of an educational play area for children at the airport.

4.         Art and design education plays an important role in nurturing the creativity and imagination of our students. It enables students to express themselves through different media and materials, and encourages them to look at the world from different perspectives. The study of art and design fuels their imagination and provides them the opportunity to learn and appreciate the diversity and richness of our multi-cultural society and heritage.

5.         MOE invited schools in S ingapore and the ASEAN countries to participate in the exhibition. A total of 104 art and design entries were received from 75 schools. This includes 63 art and design works from Singapore and 41 pieces of art work from the other nine ASEAN countries.

6.         To add to the atmosphere of the event, busking performances and fringe

activities by S ingapore students will be held throughout the exhibition period.

7.         Colours of Southeast Asia is open to the public from 23 March to 25 March 2006 (Thursday to Saturday), from 11.00 am to 9.00 pm daily. More information can be found www.moe.gov.sg/artanddesignexhibition2006.
