ENHANCED EDUCATIONAL LINKAGES BETWEEN BRUNEI DARUSSALAM AND SINGAPORE
1. Brunei Darussalam and Singapore are forging stronger links in education by signing a Government-to-Government Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on education cooperation between the two countries. The MOU covers collaborations from school to university levels. This is the first Government-to-Government MOU on education cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
2. Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education, Singapore, and Pehin Abdul Rahman Taib, Minister of Education, Brunei Darussalam, signed the MOU on 14 February 2006, during Pehin Abdul Rahman Taib’s visit to Singapore from 13 to 15 February 2006.
3. At the school level, 5 schools from Brunei Darussalam will each partner a school from Singapore under the school twinning programme. The partner schools will conduct joint activities for their students such as camps, projects and exchange of visits. In addition, students from both countries will engage in joint cultural, sports, adventure and leadership activities.
4. The MOU also formalises existing collaborations and provides opportunities for greater sharing and learning among teachers and school leaders from both countries. Besides the attachment of teachers to schools and education institutions in both countries, teachers and school leaders will also attend training programmes together. For instance, school leaders from Brunei Darussalam attend the Leaders in Education Programme at the National Institute of Education with potential school principals from Singapore.
5. At the university level, there will be closer collaborations between our universities and Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The universities will explore greater exchanges and collaborations in areas of mutual interests.
6. A Joint Working Group, to be co-chaired by officials from Ministry of Education, Brunei Darussalam and Ministry of Education, Singapore, will be set up to review and monitor the progress of the collaborations under the MOU.
