Visit by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education, to China, 8-12 January 2006

1. Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education, will be visiting Beijing and Nanjing from 8-12 January 2006, to meet Chinese leaders and promote closer collaboration in education between Singapore and China.
2. Mr Shanmugaratnam will meet his counterpart Minister Zhou Ji, Education Minister, People’s Republic of China, with whom he will renew a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cooperation and Exchanges in the field of Education.
3. Mr Shanmugaratnam will also witness the signing of two other MOUs for collaboration in the tertiary sector - between the National University of Singapore and Nanjing University; and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and Beijing Foreign Studies University. He will visit several top Chinese schools, Peking University and Nanjing University to study changes in China’s education system and to promote closer ties with Singapore schools and universities.
4. In Nanjing, Mr Shanmugaratnam will meet Li Yuanchao, Jiangsu Party Secretary, Luo Zhijun, Secretary of the CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee and Ren Yanshen, Jiangsu Deputy Party Secretary.
5. He will also take the opportunity to meet with Singaporean students studying in Beijing, and Singaporeans living in Nanjing.
6. He will be accompanied on the trip by officials from the Singapore China Foundation, National University of Singapore, IE Singapore and Ministry of Education.
