VISIT BY MR THARMAN SHANMUGARATNAM, MINISTER FOR EDUCATION, TO JAPAN, 9-16 JUNE 2005

1.         Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education, will be visiting Tokyo, Japan from 9-16 June 2005 on education and financial sector matters.

2.         Mr Shanmugaratnam will lead an MOE delegation to study Japan’s education policy reforms. He will call on Japanese Minister for Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Mr Nariaki Nakayama, and visit several Japanese schools and universities. The delegation will study both the system-wide reforms in Japanese education in recent years and school-based innovations aimed at curriculum flexibility and encouraging student initiative.

3.         In his capacity as Deputy Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Mr Shanmugaratnam will call on Japanese Minister for Finance, Mr Sadakazu Tanigaki, Bank of Japan Governor, Mr Toshihiko Fukui, and State Minister for Financial Services, Mr Tatsuya Ito, and heads of Japanese financial institutions to discuss matters of common interest in Asian financial markets.

4.           Mr Shanmugaratnam will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Education and MAS, and a team of school principals.
