DPM TAN TO ATTEND NATIONAL SECURITY DIALOGUE WITH YOUNG SINGAPOREANS 1. Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Security and Defence Dr Tony Tan will speak at a Dialogue on National Security with Young Singaporeans at National Junior College on Friday, 5 November 2004 at 3.30pm. 2. This Dialogue is the second in a series of public forums on national security conducted by DPM Tan after the introduction in July of Singapore’s Strategic Framework for National Security. The Framework charts Singapore’s responses to the challenges of transnational terrorism. Among other elements, it stresses the importance of tight networking and coordination in the fight against terror, not just across government agencies, but also between government and other sectors of society. 3. On 10 October 2004, DPM Tan had addressed grassroots leaders and residents from Sembawang GRC and the adjoining constituencies of Nee Soon East and Nee Soon Central at the first of the Dialogues on National Security. Earlier, on 27 August 2004, he had also spoken to senior security practitioners from across the Singapore government at the National Security Seminar. 4. Friday’s dialogue session with young Singaporeans will stress the critical role which they can play in the fight against terror. Young Singaporeans must be prepared to meet any contingency, and to do so, they must understand the nature of the threat confronting Singapore, and be resilient, involved and determined in the face of terror. 5 An audience numbering around 400, comprising students representing the 17 Junior Colleges and Centralised Institute in Singapore, will attend the event on Friday. Dr Tan will also be joined by Minister for Education Tharman Shanmugaratnam. For further queries, please contact: Lim Yuin Chien Matthew Ou |
