PERFORMANCE AT THE 2004 INTERNATIONAL BIOLOGY AND MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIADS

1      The Ministry of Education would like to congratulate the Singapore students who have won medals at two International Olympiads held in July 2004 - the 15th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) and the 45th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

15th International Biology Olympiad (IBO)

2      The 15th IBO was held in Brisbane, Australia from 11-18 July 2004. All four students representing Singapore received Gold and Silver medals in a field of 160 student participants from 43 countries.

3      The two Gold medallists are Lim Tse Yang of Raffles Junior College and Seah Kwee Boon, Brandon of Anglo-Chinese Junior College. The two Silver medallists are Zhang Tianyi of Raffles Junior College and Huang Weixin of Hwa Chong Junior College.

4      In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 2nd out of the 43 participating countries. The top three countries were the United States of America, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Singapore was placed 5th in last year’s IBO.

45th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

5      All six students who represented Singapore at the 45th IMO held in Athens, Greece, from 6 – 18 July 2004, received medals in a field of 486 student participants from 85 countries.

6      The three Silver medallists are Tay Wei En Joel and Kueh Ju Lui Andre of Raffles Junior College, and Tay Jingyi Kenneth of Anglo-Chinese Junior College. The three Bronze medallists are Sia Jia Min Charmaine and Anand Bharathwaj Rajagopalan of Raffles Junior College, and Chen Chongli Daniel of Hwa Chong Junior College.

7      The delegation leaders were Dr Wong Yan Loi from the National University of Singapore and Mr Teo Teck Kian from Victoria Junior College.

8      Our students' participation in the International Olympiads is a joint effort between the Ministry of Education and the following organisations:

        • Singapore Institute of Biology,
        • Singapore Mathematical Society,
        • National University of Singapore, and
        • National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.
