REVISION TO JUNIOR COLLEGE AND CENTRALISED INSTITUTE ACADEMIC CALENDARS
1. The Junior College (JC) and Centralised Institute (CI) calendars will be revised from January 2006, based on a single admission exercise in March. The revision arose from requests by JC and CI principals and teachers, to remove 'churning' of students caused by the two separate admission exercises in January and March currently.
2. Under the revised calendars, JC and CI Year 1 students will start school by mid-March after the earlier release of the 'O' level results. The start of the 'A' level exams and the corresponding release of the results will be shifted to about two weeks later compared to today.
3. MOE has developed the revised JC and CI calendar templates (see Annex A) in consultation with the JCs and CI. JCs and CI have the flexibility to adapt the revised calendars to suit their respective needs, within the key parameters identified (see Annex B).
BACKGROUND
4. The revision of JC and CI calendars was one of the recommendations of the JC/Upper Secondary Education Review in October 2002. Currently, there are 2 admissions exercises for JCs and CI; a provisional exercise in January using the results of the school preliminary examinations and another in March based on 'O' level results. Some JCs experience as much as 40-50% churning of students over the 2 admission exercises. This results in a significant amount of re-teaching of subjects, re-orientation of students and reduces the sense of affiliation among students.
