THE TRIM AND FIT AND MINDEF PHYSICAL FITNESS PERFORMANCE AWARDS 2004

Trim and Fit (TAF) Awards

1.           The Ministry of Education has awarded the TAF Gold and Silver Awards to a total of 129 and 146 schools respectively (see  Annex 1) for their efforts in promoting healthy living and improving physical fitness of their students in 2003. This is an increase of 5 schools receiving the Gold Award, from 124 schools in year 2002. Annex 2lists the schools receiving the Gold and Silver Awards.

2.           The TAF awards are presented annually to schools. Each year, schools are banded according to their fitness index, results in the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) test and percentage of overweight students. The TAF banding criteria are given in  Annex 3. Schools in Band A will receive the Gold Award while schools in Band B will receive the Silver Award.

3.           The Trim and Fit (TAF) Programme was implemented in 1992 in support of the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign. The objectives are to reduce obesity and improve physical fitness among students. The programme has helped to raise the awareness of students, teachers and parents on the importance and principles of healthy living. Two schools which have been winning the TAF Gold Award since its inception are Singapore Chinese Girls' Primary and River Valley High School.

MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award

4.           The Ministry of Defence will be presenting the MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award (MPFPA) to 14 Junior Colleges (JCs) and 2 Centralised Institutes (CIs) this year. The award is given out to JCs and CIs whose final year students have achieved the targeted Gold/Silver pass rate in the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA).

5.           The MPFPA is to recognise the efforts of Junior Colleges (JCs) and Centralised Institutes (CIs) in promoting physical fitness. MPFPA recipients will each receive a monetary award based on the number of final year students who achieve a Gold or Silver standard for NAPFA. In addition, JCs/CIs that achieve the Best Performer Award and Most Improved Award will be given an additional monetary incentive of $3,000 and $1,500 respectively. MPFPA recipients will also each receive a trophy.

6.           This year, Jurong Institute will receive the Best Performer Award and St Andrew's JC will receive the Most Improved Award. The Merit Award will be presented to Anderson JC, Anglo-Chinese JC, Catholic JC, Hwa Chong JC, Jurong JC, Nanyang JC, National JC, Outram Institute, Raffles JC, Serangoon JC, St. Andrew's JC, Tampines JC, Temasek JC, Victoria JC and Yishun JC.

For the fitness index and physical fitness pass rate, a school must attain or exceed the percentages set for the respective Band. However, for the overweight percentage, the school must not exceed the percentage set for the respective Band.

3.

For example, to be placed in Band A, a primary school must attain or exceed 84% and 80% set for the fitness index and physical fitness test pass rate respectively, but for the overweight percentage, it should not exceed 9%.
