Singapore hosts the 1st Sino-Singapore Undergraduate Exchange Programme 28 November - 12 December 2003

 

1           The 1st Sino-Singapore Undergraduate Exchange Programme will be held in Singapore from 28 November to 12 December 2003. Fifty undergraduates and officials from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing Language and Culture University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and Tsinghua University will be in Singapore for the inaugural Exchange Programme. Students from National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University will play host to their counterparts from the People's Republic of China (PRC).

2           During their stay in Singapore, the PRC undergraduates will visit several government agencies, companies and education institutions in Singapore, including the Ministry of Education, Jurong Town Corporation, National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. They will be introduced to Singapore's key education and economic policies, and participate in dialogue sessions with our politicians and senior government officials. Politicians who will meet with the PRC undergraduates include Minister of State for Education & Community Development and Sports, Mr Chan Soo Sen, and MP for Aljunied GRC, Dr Ong Seh Hong.

3           The PRC undergraduates will also experience aspects of Singaporean life and culture through visits to places such as the Pasir Ris East Community Club, Night Safari, the Esplanade and local places of worship.

4           The undergraduates from NUS and NTU will make their return visit to PRC on 16 - 30 December 2003.

Background

5           Under the Memorandum of Understanding which was signed between the Ministries of Education of the People's Republic of China and Republic of Singapore on 29 May 2002, both parties agreed to exchange up to 50 outstanding university students annually and to enlist the help of the All China Youth Federation and the National Youth Council of Singapore to run the visit programme. The objectives of the Exchange Programme are to broaden bilateral ties between China and Singapore and to foster understanding, collaboration and bonding between our students and PRC students. The programme in Singapore will be co-organised by the Ministry of Manpower, Ministry of Trade and Industry, National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.
