THE TRIM AND FIT AND MINDEF PHYSICAL FITNESS PERFORMANCE AWARDS 2003

1              The Ministry of Education has awarded the TAF Gold and Silver Awards to a total of 124 and 167 schools respectively (see Annex 1) for their efforts in promoting healthy living and improving physical fitness of their students in 2002. This is an increase of 8 schools receiving the Gold Award, from 116 schools in year 2001. Annex 2lists the schools receiving the Gold and Silver Awards.

2             The TAF awards are presented annually to schools. Each year, schools are banded according to their fitness index, results in the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) test and percentage of overweight students. The TAF banding criteria are given in Annex 3. Schools in Band A will receive the Gold Award while schools in Band B will receive the Silver Award.

3             The Trim And Fit (TAF) Programme was implemented in 1992 in support of the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign. The objectives are to reduce obesity and improve physical fitness among students. Since its inception, the programme has helped to raise the awareness of students, teachers and parents on the importance and principles of healthy living.

MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award

4             The Ministry of Defence will be presenting the MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award (MPFPA) to a total of 16 JCs/CIs this year. Jurong Institute will receive the Best Performance Award and Outram Institute will receive the Most Improved Performance Award. The Merit Award will be presented to Anderson JC, Anglo-Chinese JC, Catholic JC, Hwa Chong JC, Jurong JC, Nanyang JC, National JC, Outram Institute, Raffles JC, Serangoon JC, St. Andrew's JC, Tampines JC, Temasek JC, Victoria JC and Yishun JC.

5             The MPFPA is to recognise the efforts of junior colleges (JCs) and centralised institutes (CIs) in promoting physical fitness. The MPFPA is based on the NAPFA Gold and Silver pass rate for the entire final year student population (JC2/PU3, including female students and foreign students). The JCs/CIs need to attain:

  • at least Band B status in the TAF Scheme and
  • a NAPFA Gold/Silver Pass Rate of at least 65%.

JCs/CIs that meet the criteria will each receive a monetary incentive based on the number of final-year students who achieve a Gold or Silver standard in the NAPFA test.

6             This year, MINDEF has introduced 2 additional lump-sum awards for JCs/CIs that have achieved outstanding NAPFA results and made significant improvements. JCs/CIs achieving the Best Performance Award and Most Improved Performance Award will be given an additional monetary incentive of $3,000 and $1,500 respectively.
