VISIT TO JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES BY SENIOR MINISTER OF STATE FOR TRADE & INDUSTRY AND EDUCATION, MR THARMAN SHANMUGARATNAM, FROM 21 TO 30 SEPTEMBER 2002

          Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Education, will be visiting Japan and the United States from 21 to 30 September 2002.

2        Mr Shanmugaratnam will be leading a Singapore delegation to the 8th International Energy Forum (8th IEF) to be held in Osaka, Japan on 21 September 2002. The Forum, an informal gathering of ministers from energy producing and consuming countries, is expected to discuss issues relating to the world energy outlook, and interactions between energy, environmental and economic issues. Officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Energy Market Authority of Singapore will be accompanying Mr Shanmugaratnam to the Forum.

3        During his visit to the United States, Mr Shanmugaratnam will be attending The Leaders Project Conference. The inaugural Conference, with the theme "Transitions in the Pacific Rim", is designed to help develop new relationships and dialogue on political, economic, social and cultural policy issues.

4        Mr Shanmugaratnam will also be visiting top public and private educational institutions in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, to establish links and gain insights on practices and innovations in education. He will also be giving a seminar at Stanford University on "What China Means for Asia". Mr Shanmugaratnam will, in addition, be meeting with the Singaporean community living in the San Francisco Bay Area. While in the US, Mr Shanmugaratnam will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Education.
