Results of the 18th National Software Competition

      

          The 18th National Software Competition (NSC), organised and hosted by the Ministry of Education, was held on 14 Sep 2002 at Singapore Polytechnic. Mr Chan Yeng Kit , Deputy Secretary (Policy) , Ministry of Education, was the Guest-of-Honour.

2.      The NSC is opened to students from Primary and Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges and Centralised Institutes. The objectives of the competition are to challenge students' skills in solving problems using computers programmes and to develop students' creativity in the use of Information Technology. It also aims to promote IT culture in schools and sustain students' interest in computer programming. The NSC comprised three events:-

Algorithm Individual Event,

Algorithm Team Event and

Multimedia Team Event.

The first event was held on 29 June 2002 while the other two were held on 14 September 2002. The lists of winners of the competition are attached at Annex A.

3.      The Algorithm Individual Event for secondary school students attracted a total of 119 student-participants from 33 secondary schools. Participants were awarded the gold, silver or bronze medals according to their levels of competency in programming. This year, one participant was awarded the gold medal, seven were awarded the silver medals and ten others were awarded the bronze medals.

4.      The Algorithm Team Event was held for students from secondary schools and junior colleges/centralized institutes. Participants from 46 secondary schools and 15 junior colleges competed in teams of three to solve four programming problems within two hours. Teamwork, problem-solving skills, speed and accuracy were the main factors for success in this event. The winning teams in the Secondary section are : Raffles Institution as the Champion team, followed by The Chinese High School as the First Runner-up and Tanjong Katong Secondary School as the Second Runner-up. Five schools were awarded the Merit Award. They are Fuhua Secondary School, Fairfield Methodist School, Anglican High School, Victoria School and Saint Joseph's Institution. The Junior College Section saw Raffles Junior College emerged as the Champion Team for the second year running, followed by Hwa Chong Junior College as the First Runner-up and Victoria Junior College, as the Second Runner-up. Five junior colleges were awarded the Merit Award. They are Temasek Junior College, National Junior College, Anglo-Chinese Junior College, Pioneer Junior College and Nanyang Junior College.

5.      The Multimedia Team Event was opened to primary and secondary schools. Teams of three had to design an educational multimedia interactive game based on the theme "Rediscovering Singapore". Clarity of theme, creativity, effective use of multimedia elements, artwork and teamwork were the main criteria for the evaluation of the entries. A total of 67 entries from the Primary Schools Category and 60 entries from the Secondary Schools Category were received. Eight teams from each category were short-listed for the final judging on 14 September 2002.

6.      The winning teams for the primary section are : Corporation Primary School as the Champion Team, followed by Hougang Primary School as the First Runner-up and Nan Hua Primary School as the Second Runner-up. Five teams were awarded the Merit Award. They are, Fuhua Primary School, Bukit Timah Primary School, Pandan Primary School, Jiemin Primary School and Canberra Primary School. The Secondary Section saw Methodist Girls' School emerged as the Champion Team, followed by Kent Ridge Secondary School as the First Runner-up and Balestier Hill Secondary School as the Second Runner-up. Five schools were awarded the Merit Award. They are Raffles Institution, Maris Stella High School, Raffles Girls' Secondary School, Anglican High School and Beatty Secondary School.

7.      The NSC is co-hosted by the Singapore Polytechnic and supported by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and the Singapore Computer Society. The main sponsor of 18th NSC is the Singapore Information Technology Federation. A list of other sponsors is attached at Annex B .
