PERFORMANCE AT THE 2002 INTERNATIONAL BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS AND MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIADS

 

1        Singapore students won medals at four international Olympiads in 2002 - the 13th International Biology Olympiad (IBO), the 34th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), the 33rd International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) and the 43rd International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO).

13th International Biology Olympiad (IBO)

2        All four students who represented Singapore received medals in a field of 155 student participants at the 13th IBO held in Riga and Jurmala, Latvia from 7 - 14 July 2002.

3        The 2 Gold medallists are Ng Shyh Chang and Huang Mingyan, both of Raffles Junior College. The 2 Silver medallists are Chia Wei Zhong Jonathan and Chia Sheng Zhi, both of Raffles Junior College.

4        The team was led by Assoc. Prof. Lim Tit Meng from the National University of Singapore and Assoc. Prof. Shirley Lim from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.

5        In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 4th out of 40 participating countries. Three countries, the Republic of Korea, the People's Republic of China and Taiwan, tied for the top position, each with 3 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal. In total, 16 Gold, 33 Silver and 46 Bronze medals were awarded.

34th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO)

6        All four students who represented Singapore at the 34th IChO held in Groningen, the Netherlands, from 5 - 14 July 2002, also received medals in a field of 225 participants.

7        The 2 Silver medallists are Lui Pak Ling and Tan Chun Ghee, both students of Raffles Junior College. The 2 Bronze medallists are Tan Ying Xim of Hwa Chong Junior College and Rachel Wang Ruiqi of Raffles Junior College.

8        The delegation leaders were Assoc. Prof. Lai Yee Hing and Dr Fan Wai Yip from the National University of Singapore.

9        In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 12th out of 57 participating countries, sharing the position with United Kingdoms and Turkey. The People's Republic of China was the top performing country with 4 Gold medals. In total, 28 Gold, 49 Silver, 68 Bronze medals and 26 Honourable Mentions were awarded.

33rd International Physics Olympiad (IPhO)

10      The 33rd IPhO was held in Bali, Indonesia from 21 - 30 July 2002. All five students who represented Singapore received awards in a field of 296 participants.

11      Nicholas Tham Ming Qiang of Raffles Junior College and Ng Boon Leong of Anglo-Chinese Junior College won Gold medals while Joseph Tan Shengqiang of Raffles Junior College won a Silver medal. Foo Chuan Sheng of Raffles Junior College won a Bronze medal while Lee Yang Yang of Raffles Junior College received an Honourable Mention.

12      The team was led by Dr Kwek Leong Chuan from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University and Dr Roland Su Jong Hea from the National University of Singapore.

13      In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 10th out of 66 participating countries. The top team was from Iran with 5 Gold medals.

43rd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

14      Five out of six students who represented Singapore received medals in a field of 471 participants at the 43rd IMO held in Glasgow, United Kingdom from 19 - 30 July 2002.

15      The 2 Silver medallists are Poh Wei Quan Julius and Tan Kiat Chuan, both students of Raffles Junior College. The 2 Bronze medallists are Leung Ngai-Hang Zachary of Anglo-Chinese Junior College and Meng Dazhe of Raffles Junior College. Tan Weiyu Colin of Raffles Junior College received an Honourable Mention. Lin Zhiwei Calvin, of Hwa Chong Junior College was the 6th member of the team.

16      The delegation leaders were Assoc. Prof. Tay Tiong Seng from the National University of Singapore and Mr Manu Kapur, from National Junior College.

17      In terms of total score, Singapore was placed 30th out of 84 participating countries. The top three spots went to the People's Republic of China, Russia and the United States of America respectively.

18      Our students' participation in the international olympiads is a joint effort between the Ministry of Education and the following organisations:

Institute of Physics, Singapore,
Singapore Institute of Biology,
Singapore National Institute of Chemistry,
Singapore Mathematical Society,
National University of Singapore, and
National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.
