2001 PSLE RESULTS


        A total of 50,331 Primary 6 pupils sat for the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) this year, a decrease of 4,403 (or 8.0%) over the 2000 Primary 6 cohort. There were 43,642 pupils from the EM1 and EM2 courses and 6,689 from the EM3 course. As in past examinations, pupils in the EM1 and EM2 courses sat for English, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue; pupils in the EM3 course sat for Foundation English, Foundation Mathematics and Basic Mother Tongue.

2      In all, 48,675 pupils (or 96.7%) have been assessed as suitable to proceed to secondary school. Of these students, 61.4% are eligible for the Special or Express course and 35.3% for the Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical) course.

3      There are 1,656 pupils (or 3.3%) who are assessed to be not yet ready for secondary school in 2002 or more suited for vocational training. Of these, 1,424 will be given another year in Primary 6 to consolidate their basic language and mathematics skills. The remaining 232 who are over-aged can enrol in basic vocational training courses.

4.      The tentative date for the release of Secondary One posting results is Friday, 21 Dec 2001.

(a)

The percentage of pupils eligible for secondary schools must be at least or above the national average of 96.7%;

(b)

The school must have at least 80% of its pupils who are eligible for Special and Express courses;

(c)

The percentage of pupils eligible for N(A), Express and Special courses must not dip by more than two percentage points compared to the 2000 results; and

(d)

The school must have at least 100 candidates.

(b)

The school must register at least a five-percentage point improvement in the percentage of pupils who qualify for Special/Express courses compared to the 2000 results;

(c)

The school must register positive improvement in the percentage of pupils eligible for N(A), Express and Special courses compared to the 2000 results; and

(d)

The school must have at least 100 candidates.
