ANOTHER 33 SCHOOLS TO BE REDEVELOPED UNDER PRIME PHASE 3

1.     Under the Programme for Rebuilding and IMproving Existing Schools (PRIME), another 33 schools in Phase 3 will enjoy new or upgraded facilities when redevelopment work for these schools is completed by end 2004. Most of the redevelopment work will commence in early 2002. The list of 33 schools to be redeveloped under PRIME Phase 3 can be found in Annex A.

2.    PRIME was launched by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in May 1999. Estimated to cost $4.5 billion, this programme aims to redevelop about 290 schools over 7 years in 5 phases, from 1999 to 2005. We are into Phase 3 of PRIME and 166 schools will be redeveloped under the 3 phases. This represents 57% of the total number of schools to be redeveloped under PRIME. Around 250,000 students will reap the benefits of better school facilities when the schools are completed by end 2004. Many thousands more will enjoy the same benefits in the next few years.

3. PRIME supports the Ministry's "Thinking Schools, Learning Nation" vision by ensuring that all schools have a conducive physical environment to enhance teaching and learning. Under the programme, schools will be fitted with new and upgraded facilities, which include computer laboratories, media resource libraries, IT learning resource rooms, pastoral care rooms and health & fitness rooms. Schools will be networked for access to Internet. Teachers and students can also look forward to bigger classrooms and staff-rooms, and more interaction areas.
