SINGAPORE EMERGES FIRST AT THE 2001 INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIAD IN INFORMATICS (IOI)

1.      At the 13th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), Singapore emerged joint first with Slovakia in terms of medals won. Our delegation of four students received 2 gold and 2 silver medals.

2.      Our gold medallists are Nabil Christopher Moh Heng Ping and Tay Kah Keng, both from Raffles Junior College. Our silver medallists are Tay Kah Seng from Raffles Junior College and Chiu Jiawei from Hwa Chong Junior College.

3.      The event was held in Tampere, Finland from 13 to 21 July 2001. A total of 272 students from 74 countries (including China, the Russian Federation, the United States of America and Vietnam) participated. Our delegation leaders were A/P Andrew Lim Leong Chye from the School of Computing, National University of Singapore and Mr Gi Soong Chee from Victoria Junior College.

4.      Annex A shows the performance of some of the participating countries from 1999-2001.

5.      Our students' participation in the IOI is a joint effort of the Ministry of Education and the National University of Singapore.
