SINGAPORE STUDENTS IMPROVE THEIR PERFORMANCES AT THE 2001 INTERNATIONAL PHYSICS, MATHEMATICAL AND CHEMISTRY OLYMPIADS

Singapore students also achieve outstanding results in their first participation in the International Biology Olympiad

 

1.     Singapore students participating in the 32nd International Physics Olympiad, 42nd International Mathematical Olympiad and 33rd International Chemistry Olympiad this year have improved their performances. The Singapore students who participated in the International Biology Olympiad for the first time this year also achieved outstanding results.

INTERNATIONAL PHYSICS OLYMPIAD (IPHO)

2.     The 32nd IPhO was held in Antalya, Turkey from 28 June to 6 July 2001. All five students representing Singapore received awards in a field of 306 participants.

Gold Medallists: Goh Weiqiang Joel of Anglo-Chinese Junior College
Bronze Medallists: Chua Huiyi Jay and Huang Ziyan, both of Raffles Junior College
Honourable Mentions: Lee Zhiyi Serena of Raffles Junior College and Tan Rui Zhen of Temasek Junior College.

3.     The delegation leaders were Dr Paul Lim Hock Siah from the National University of Singapore and Mr Goh Wee Sen from Victoria Junior College. Dr Kwek Leong Chuan of the National Institute of Education accompanied the team as an observer.

4.     In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 10th out of 65 participating countries. The top team was from the Peoples' Republic of China with 4 Gold and 1 Silver medals. Details of our past two year' performances are shown at Annex A, Table 1.

42ND INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD (IMO)

5.     The 42nd IMO was held in Washington D.C., USA from 1 to 14 July 2001. Singapore's team of 6 students won 1 Silver and 4 Bronze medals in a field of 473 participants.

Silver medallist: Tan Kiat Chuan of Raffles Junior College
Bronze medallists: Lin Zhiwei Calvin of Hwa Chong Junior College, Yeh Yuanlong, Gary of Anglo-Chinese Junior College, Tham Ming Qiang Nicholas of Raffles Junior College, and Meng Dazhe, of River Valley High School

6.     Leung Ngai-hung Zachary, of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) was the 6th member of the team. The delegation leaders were A/P Tay Tiong Seng from the National University of Singapore and Mr Teo Teck Kian, Thomas from Victoria Junior College.

7.     In terms of total score, Singapore was placed 29th out of 83 participating countries. The top three spots went to the People's Republic of China, Russia and the United States of America respectively.

8.     Singapore's performance in IMOs for the past two years is shown in Annex A, Table 2.

INTERNATIONAL CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD (ICHO)

9.     The 33rd IChO was held in Mumbai, India, from 6 to 15 July 2001. All four students representing Singapore received medals in a field of 210 participants.

Gold medallist: Tan Jianlong of Raffles Junior College
Silver medallists Tay Wenkai and Huang Yaohui, Phillips, both of Raffles Junior College
Bronze medallist: Ruan Shiyun of Hwa Chong Junior College

10.    The delegation leaders were A/Prof Lai Yee Hing and Prof Xu Guo Qin from the National University of Singapore.

11.    In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 9th out of 54 participating countries. The People's Republic of China, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Korea shared top position with 3 Gold and 1 Silver medals.

12.    Our teams' performance in IChOs for the past two years is summarised at Annex A, Table 3.

INTERNATIONAL BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD (IBO)

13.    The 12th IBO was held in Brussels, Belgium from 8 to 15 July 2001. All four students representing Singapore received medals in a field of 151 student participants:

Gold medallists Wei Yifeng of Anglo-Chinese Junior College and Teo Shiyi of Raffles Junior College
Silver medallists: Priscilla Ng and Melissa Jane Fullwood, both of Raffles Junior College

14.    The team was led by A/P Chia Tet Fatt and A/P Shirley Lim from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.

15.    In terms of medals won, Singapore tied with Taiwan for 3rd place out of 39 participating countries. The Republic of Korea topped the chart with 3 Gold and 1 Silver medals.

16.    Our students' participation in the international olympiads is a joint effort between the Ministry of Education and the following organisations:

Institute of Physics, Singapore,
Singapore Institute of Biology,
Singapore National Institute of Chemistry,
Singapore Mathematical Society,
National University of Singapore, and
National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.
