SEMINAR ON "TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION - SINGAPORE AND UK EXPERIENCES", 22-24 OCTOBER 2001

The Ministry of Education (MOE), together with the British High Commission and The British Council, is organising a seminar on "Technology in Education - Singapore and UK Experiences" from 22 - 24 October 2001 at MOE. Senior Minister of State for Education, Mr Peter Chen, will open the seminar on 22 October 2001 at the MOE Function Room at 9 am. The UK Minister for School Standards at the Department for Education and Skills, Mr Stephen Timms MP, will give the opening address at the event.

2      The seminar will involve educationalists and practitioners from both countries, exchanging views on their experiences with the introduction of new technology in schools, and to identify and document good practices as well as recommendations for policy-making. The themes covered over the three days include 'ICT for Teaching and Learning', 'School Leadership and ICT Implementation', 'Technology Planning', 'Future Trends of ICT in Schools', and 'ICT and Assessment'.

3      Day Three of the seminar will feature eight cutting-edge British companies describing the latest developments in educational infocommunications technologies (ICT), particularly in the field of assessment. The group comprises members of a mission from the British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA). The UK is a world leader in education technology and the companies are keen to forge links with Singaporean partners from both the private sector and government.

4      A total of sixty participants from Singapore and the UK will be attending the seminar. Participants consist of personnel from Institutes of Higher Learning who are involved in research and training matters, MOE officers and school leaders.

5      The seminar takes place under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in ICT in Education, signed by MOE, Singapore, and the Education Departments of the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in October 1999. Under the MOU, the two countries agreed to explore opportunities for co-operation in the enhancement of learning and training at all levels and the provision of skills to young people that will prepare them for the emerging global information society.

MontageWorld Workshop

6      MOE will also host a workshop on 24 and 25 October 2001 to launch MontageWorld, a portal website developed by The British Council to facilitate web-based projects between schools in the UK and in other countries. Singapore is a pilot site for this scheme. The workshop participants will be from Malaysia and Thailand as well as from the UK and Singapore.
