INAUGURAL COMPASS SEMINAR: CONNECTING FACES
1. To promote greater partnerships between the home, industry, community and the school, COMPASS (COMmunity and PArents in Support of Schools) will be organising an inaugural seminar entitled Home-School-Community Ties: Connecting FACES (Family, Alumni, Community, Enterprise, Schools) on 22 September 2001. Participants will include school leaders, senior officials from the Ministry of Education, business and industry leaders, representatives from school parent support groups and self-help groups, social service agencies, tertiary institutions, and representatives of other stakeholders. The expected number of participants is about 1,400.
2. The seminar will provide a platform for different stakeholders in education to share their perspectives on the imperatives of home, school and community partnerships, which will help in the total education of our pupils.
3. At the Seminar, Minister for Education, RAdm (NS) Teo Chee Hean, will deliver the opening address, which will provide an overview of the current status of partnerships in schools. The keynote speaker is Mr Bill Strickland, President and CEO of Bidwell Training Centre and the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh. Mr Strickland is renowned in the USA for his pioneering efforts in reaching out to youths in the community, by developing collaborative partnerships between schools and external organisations. The seminar will also include a plenary session, fielded by a panel of speakers representing the key stakeholders in education. They include:

| d) | Ms Janet Ang Managing Director, IBM (Singapore) Representing Business Organisations |
|
| e) | Mr Jimmy Tan Principal, Holy Innocents' Primary School Representing Schools |
