STEPPING UP TEACHER RECRUITMENT

The Ministry of Education is starting the 2001/2002 recruitment cycle for the period 1 Aug 01 to 31 July 02. The Ministry intends to step up recruitment in this recruitment cycle, especially to recruit more teachers for teaching at the secondary school and junior college level.

Result of 2000/2001 Recruitment Cycle

2      The Ministry has recruited many quality teachers in the last few years. Recruitment numbers have continued to be high. In the last recruitment cycle (1 Aug 2000 to 31 Jul 2001), the Ministry recruited a total of 2,450 teachers. This is an increase of 11% over the previous recruitment cycle.

Recruitment Of Secondary School/JC Teachers

3      The student enrolment at the secondary/JC level will increase in the next few years. The larger number of students translates into a need for a larger number of teachers. The Ministry is therefore targeting the recruitment of secondary school/JC teachers in this recruitment cycle.

Targeting Mid-Career Professionals

4      The Ministry conducts year-round recruitment. In the first half of the year, many fresh university graduates and fresh school leavers with good 'A' level results and polytechnic diplomas would have been recruited into the teaching service. For the second half of the year, we hope to recruit mid-career candidates, i.e. those already in the workforce and are considering a career switch to teaching.

5      Given their varied background and experience, mid-career entrants to the teaching service play a key role in contributing to the rich diversity of the teaching fraternity. The life skills and knowledge gained in their working experience will benefit our students.

Selection Process

6      MOE will continue to recruit teachers from the top one-third of each Primary One cohort, which include graduates, school leavers with good 'A' level results and the top band of Polytechnic Diploma graduates. Besides satisfying our shortlisting criteria, all applicants to the Education Service are interviewed by a panel comprising senior educationists. The interview panel asseses candidates not only on their academic achievements, but also on their interest in teaching, and personal and leadership qualities that will enable them to be good teachers. All new recruits undergo full-time teacher training at the National Institute of Education (NIE). While in NIE, trainee teachers are also being assessed on their aptitude and attitude towards teaching. We will continue to uphold the same standards and criteria even as we step up recruitment.

Public Seminar

7      To provide potential applicants with a better understanding of teaching, a public seminar on "Teaching as a Career" will be held at the Orchard Hotel on Sunday, 26 Aug 2001 at 3 pm. Interested participants can register for the seminar by calling the 24-hour hotline 1800-8408585.

8.      Those ready to apply for a teaching position can submit their applications on-line at the MOE Internet at www1.moe.edu.sg/teach. Application forms can also be requested by calling:

9.      With the increase in quality teacher intake, the Education Service will be well positioned to meet the demands and challenges of the future.
