SINGAPORE THINKQUEST JUNIOR AWARDS EVENT 2001 CUM
LAUNCH FOR 2002

        Singapore ThinkQuest Junior Awards Event 2001 cum Launch for 2002, organised and hosted by the Ministry of Education (MOE), was held on 10 November 2001 at Lakeview Lodge, Jurong BirdPark. Mrs Lim Soon Tze, Director of Schools, officiated at the event, attended by 400 guests, principals, teachers and students. Two finalist teams showcased their entries and shared their ThinkQuest Junior experiences.

2      First launched by MOE for primary schools in November 1999, Singapore ThinkQuest Junior is an educational website designing competition organised by MOE and co-hosted by Net:wxs International. Modelled after the ThinkQuest Junior created by US-based Advanced Network & Services, Inc (ANS), it encourages students from 9 to 11 years to take a meaningful interest in computers and technology. It also aims to encourage these students to take advantage of the Internet as a constantly growing source of information and as a powerful collaborative tool by designing and creating educational web sites.

3      In the first year of the competition, over 80 teams consisting of 480 students came together to create educational websites. This year, over 100 teams consisting of 520 students registered for the competition. From April to June, the students worked in teams of 2 to 6 to create more than 100 websites on various topics and subjects such as Social Sciences, Arts and Literature, Science and Mathematics, and Sports and Health. 23 teams were shortlisted for the finalist teams judging cum interview session in September 2001.

4      Judges from the polytechnics, NUS, private organization and MOE awarded the teams various award levels, ranging from platinum, gold, silver and Honourable Mention based on the teams' websites and interviews. A list of the finalist teams and the award levels are attached in the Annex.
