THE TRIM AND FIT (TAF) AND MINDEF PERFORMANCE AWARDS 2000
Trim and Fit (TAF) Scheme Awards
1. In 2000, a total of 102 schools qualified for the Trim and Fit (TAF) Scheme Gold Award, representing an increase of 7 schools as compared with 1999. In addition, a total of 190 schools qualified for the TAF Scheme Silver Award, representing an increase of 10 schools as compared with 1999.
2. The Trim and Fit (TAF) Programme was implemented in 1992 in support of the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign. The primary objectives are to reduce obesity and improve physical fitness among pupils. Schools are encouraged to adopt creative approaches to assist their pupils in achieving these objectives. The TAF Scheme Awards are presented annually to schools.
3. Each year, schools are banded according to their fitness index, physical fitness test and overweight percentage results. The criteria for banding are given in Annex 1.
4. Schools in Band A will receive the Gold award. The list of schools receiving the Gold award is given in Annex 2. Schools in Band B will receive the Silver award. Annex 3shows the number of schools in each band.
MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award
5. The Ministry of Defence will also be presenting the MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award to junior colleges and centralised institutes to recognise their efforts in promoting physical fitness. Temasek Junior College will be presented with the Best Performer Award and Tampines Junior College, the Most Improved School Award. Anglo-Chinese Junior College, Hwa Chong Junior College, Jurong Junior College, Raffles Junior College, Victoria Junior College, and Tampines College will receive the Merit Award.
6. There are 3 categories for this award. Details are as follows:
a) Best Performer Award
$10,000 and a plaque will be presented to the school with the highest percentage of NAPFA1 Gold and Silver awards.
b) Merit Award
$5,000 and a plaque will be presented to schools that attain a pass rate of 80% and above.
c) Most Improved School Award
The most improved school will receive $5,000 and a plaque.
Schools need to attain the TAF Scheme Silver Award to qualify for this MINDEF award. Students eligible for consideration are final-year male students of junior colleges and centralised institutes who are PES2 A and B fit Singapore citizens or permanent residents who are liable for National Service.
7. RAdm Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Education, will present the TAF Scheme Awards and the MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award to schools at the 42nd Annual General Meeting of the Singapore Schools Sports Council held on Saturday, 13 January 2001, 9.00 am, at Methodist Girls' School.

Note:
To be placed in a particular Band, a school must meet the criteria set for all three categories. For the fitness index and physical fitness pass rate, a school must attain or exceed the percentages set for the respective Band. However, for the overweight percentage, the school must not exceed the percentage set for the respective Band.
For example, to be placed in Band A, a primary school must attain or exceed 84% and 77% set for the fitness index and physical fitness test pass rate respectively, but for the overweight percentage, it should not exceed 9%.
