LOCAL MATHS CD-ROM SERIES WINS AWARD AT NEW YORK FESTIVALS

For the second time in two years, the Singapore-developed Active Primary Mathematics CD-ROM Series has won a medal in the 2000 New York Festivals International Interactive Multimedia Competition. The CD-ROM "Active Primary Mathematics with Vroot and Vroom" bagged the Bronze World Medal in the Education: Mathematics and Computer Science category. The CD-ROM series is co-published by the Educational Technology Division of the Ministry of Education, Singapore and Times Media Pte Ltd (Education Division). MOE project development specialists contributed their strengths in content and pedagogy while Times Media Pte Ltd (Education Division) contributed its expertise as a leading publisher of educational books and software.

  1. Last year, the Active Primary Mathematics in Rainbow Rock CD-ROM also bagged the Bronze World Medal in the same international competition, which was launched in 1992 to honour excellence in communications media. The emphasis in the Education Category is on outstanding achievements in educational content and pedagogy, as well as elements that touch the hearts and minds of the users. This year's entries were three times the 400 entries received last year from around the world. Of these, only 49 were invited to vie for top honours in the finals.
  1. The Active Primary Mathematics series is developed to support classroom instruction as well as to promote independent learning of mathematical concepts and skills. Its innovative approach to learning mathematics helps foster positive attitudes towards mathematics. The Vroot and Vroom title covers topics in the Primary 3 and 4 curriculum, while the Rainbow Rock title covers topics in the Primary 1 and 2 curriculum. The third and final title of the series, for Primary 5 and 6, is scheduled for release in Jan 2001.

  2. The Active Primary Mathematics series is the second mathematics series that has won international titles. The Dynamic Mathematics Series for Lower Secondary, published from 1992-7, has also won numerous international awards, such as the 1997 Macromedia People's Choice Award (USA), International Digital Media Awards 1997 (Canada) and Newmedia Invision Awards 1996 (USA).
