PERFORMANCE AT THE 1999 INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIAD INFORMATICS

1. Singapore students participated in the 11th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) held in Antalya, Turkey from 9 to 16 October 1999.

2. Three members of the IOI team received awards. Kelvin Lim Chen Hao from Anglo-Chinese Junior College, Lim Hong Ping from Hwa Chong Junior College and Tay Kah Keng from Raffles Institution received silver medals. Also in the delegation was Yuen Siu Hong from Hwa Chong Junior College.

3. The delegation was led by Dr Andrew Lim Leong Chye of the National University of Singapore and Dr Mooi Lee Choo of the Ministry of Education.

4. In terms of medals won and total score attained, Singapore was placed 18th out of 65 participating countries. Vietnam was the top performing country with 3 gold medals.

5. The competition consisted of two rounds over two days. Each round required the contestants to work individually in solving three problems within five hours. Each problem has to be solved through the writing of a computer program in any of the officially approved programming languagesĀ - Pascal or C++.

6. The IOI started in 1989. The primary goal is to stimulate interest in informatics (computing science) and information technology. Another important goal is to bring together exceptionally talented pupils from various countries and to have them share scientific and cultural experiences. Singapore has participated in the IOI since 1992. Our participants won one silver and three bronze medals in 1997 and two bronze medals in 1998. Next year, the IOI will be held in Beijing, China.
