Visit to Vietnam and Myanmar by RAdm (NS) Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, from 8 November to 12 November 1999

1. Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, RAdm (NS) Teo Chee Hean, will be visiting Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Yangon from 8 November to 12 November 1999.

2. While in Vietnam, Minister Teo will call on the Minister of Education, Professor Nguyen Minh Hien, and the Minister of Defence, Senior Lieutenant General Pham Van Tra. Minister Teo will also attend the opening ceremony of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) Regional Training Centre (RETRAC) in Ho Chi Minh City, in his capacity as the President of the SEAMEO Council.

3. In Myanmar, Minister Teo will call on the Prime Minister and Defence Minister, Senior General Than Shwe, and the Education Minister, U Than Aung. Minister Teo will also announce the extension of the ASEAN (Secondary) Scholarships to Myanmar and call on other leaders in Myanmar to discuss education and security issues.

4. Minister Teo will be visiting schools and educational institutions in both countries. Minister Teo will also take the opportunity to meet with the Singapore community in Vietnam and Myanmar. He will be accompanied by senior MOE officials.
