HOP ON IT! Release of New Multimedia Resources

  1. Hop on IT! is an event organised by Educational Technology Division (ETD) of the Ministry of Education (MOE). It is the first time that such an event is being organised and it will be held on 10 November 1999 at Singapore International Convention Centre, Suntec City. The Director-General of Education, Mr Wee Heng Tin, will be the Guest-of-Honour.
  2. This event will mark the release of the first set of CD-ROM titles produced under the first phase of MOE-Local Industry Upgrading Programme (LIUP) for secondary schools. The five titles are English Language, Chinese Language, Malay Language, Tamil Language and Chemistry. The MOE-LIUP is a collaborative initiative between MOE and the Economic Development Board to develop quality educational software for our schools.
  3. Hop On IT! will also mark the launch of Video CDs as the new method of showing educational video programmes in schools to replace the former ETV. From September 1999, ETD ceased the broadcast of ETV programmes and schools no longer needed to spend time and resources taping the programmes on television. The VCD format has many advantages over the tape format. One of which is that it can be accessed on the computers, which will enable teachers to integrate video programmes into their IT-based lessons.
  4. Hop on IT! will introduce teachers to new digital resources that can enhance teaching and learning. During this event, ETD officers and local industry representatives will share insights and ideas on integrating educational videos and the MOE LIUP CD-ROMs into lessons. They will also share about how thinking skills and values education can be incorporated into these lessons. In addition, there will be an exhibition that will showcase the software co-published by MOE and private companies. There will also be previews of other CD-ROM titles that are being developed for secondary level under the MOE-LIUP, namely, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Geography, History and Mother Tongue Languages.
  5. About 2500 teachers and school leaders are expected to participate in this event, including representatives from the various government organisations and local multimedia industry.
