A NEW JUNIOR COLLEGE FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM AND EXISTING JUNIOR COLLEGES TO BE UPGRADED

1. The Ministry of Education will start a new Junior College (JC) in Jan 2000. The existing JCs will also be upgraded to the latest JC building specifications. These plans will improve the quality of and expand choices in JC education to meet the needs of Singapore.

Pioneer Junior College - Breaking New Ground in the New Millennium

2. The new JC, which has been named Pioneer JC, will function at a temporary campus at Science Centre Road (former French-Singapore and German-Singapore Institutes) pending the completion of its new premises at Teck Whye Crescent, which are scheduled to be completed by end 2002. This new JC will have the latest JC building specifications which include additional classrooms, a 600-seater lecture theatre, IT facilities, bigger media resource library, arts and crafts room, career guidance facilities, and staff and administration areas.

3. Mr Kwek Hiok Chuang, currently a Deputy Director in the Educational Technology Division in MOE, is the Principal-designate of Pioneer JC. Mr Kwek is excited about the new JC starting in 2000. "The setting up of Pioneer JC in the year 2000 is timely and significant. This new junior college aims to prepare students for the new era by utilising technology to create, apply and disseminate information. The students of Pioneer JC will be imbued with the qualities of creativity, resourcefulness, enterprise, receptivity to change, as well as a spirit of inquiry. They will be encouraged to be independent and adventurous in their quest for new areas of knowledge, and brave enough to explore new ways to push the limits of learning to the fullest possible extent. Only then will they be ‘Pioneers’ in the true sense of the word," said Mr Kwek.

Upgrading of Existing JCs

4. Plans are also underway to upgrade the existing JCs to the latest JC building specifications. The upgrading will involve construction of new extension blocks and alteration of existing buildings to bring them to the latest standards.

5. The existing JCs to be upgraded on site are expected to be completed by Dec 2001. They are Anderson JC, Anglo-Chinese JC, Catholic JC, Hwa Chong JC, Jurong JC, Nanyang JC, National JC, Serangoon JC, Tampines JC, Temasek JC, Victoria JC and Yishun JC. Raffles JC, which will be relocated from Mount Sinai Road to Bishan Street 21 next to Raffles Institution, is scheduled for completion by end 2002. The upgrading plans for St Andrew’s JC are being finalised.
