NEW SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS TO BE MERGED
1. The Ministry of Education (MOE) will start 13 new secondary schools in 2000. The new schools are located in the HDB towns of Bukit Panjang, Choa Chu Kang, Clementi, Hougang, Jurong West, Pasir Ris, Sembawang, Sengkang, Woodlands and Yishun.
2. Five of the secondary schools will start operating from their own premises with effect from Jan 2000. They are Fuhua Secondary, Pasir Ris Crest Secondary, Unity Secondary, Woodgrove Secondary and Yishun Ring Secondary. The remaining eight secondary schools will operate in holding schools pending the completion of their buildings. They are Canberra Secondary, Compassvale Secondary, Evergreen Secondary, Marsiling Secondary, Regent Secondary, Westwood Secondary, West Coast secondary and Zhenghua Secondary,
3. Details of the schools are given in Annex A.
4. The building of new schools is to meet the demand for school places due to population shifts and to allow secondary schools to function single session.
5. Under the Programme for Rebuilding and Improving Existing Schools (PRIME), schools with small enrolment and located within close proximity to one another will be merged. In Jan 2000, Braddell Secondary and Westlake Secondary will be merged to form ‘Braddell-Westlake Secondary’ at the existing premises at Braddell Road. Mei Chin Secondary and Queensway Secondary will be merged to form ‘Queensway Secondary’ at the existing Queensway Secondary premises at Margaret Drive.
As Queensway Secondary will be upgraded under PRIME from Jan 2000-Dec 2001, the merged school will hold classes at the former New Town Secondary premises located at Queensway in the interim.
