PERFORMANCE AT THE 1999 INTERNATIONAL PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY, AND MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIADS
1. Singapore students participated in the following international Olympiads held in July 1999: 30th International Physics Olympiad Padua, Italy 18 - 27 July 1999; 31st International Chemistry Olympiad, Bangkok, Thailand, 4 - 11 July 1999; 40th International Mathematical Olympiad, Bucharest, Romania, 10 - 22 July 1999.
2. At the 30th International Physics Olympiad, four members of the IPhO team received awards. He Ruimin received a gold medal while Chen Zilong received a silver medal; Seo Jiahan Eugene and Yeo Wenzheng received bronze medals.All the four students are from Raffles Junior College. Also in the delegation was Yeon Wen Cong from Temasek Junior College. The delegation leaders were Dr Ivica Orlic of the National University of Singapore and Miss Gong Huai-Ling of Raffles Junior College. In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 13th out of 62 participating countries. Iran was the top performing countries with 5 gold medals.
3. At the 31st International Chemistry Olympiad, all four members of the IChO team received awards. Lai Ghee Xiong and Neo Tiong Cheng of Raffles Junior College received silver medals. Ong Qing Yuan and Siu Chin Yeung of Raffles Junior College received bronze medals. The delegation leaders were Prof Wong Ming Keong of the National University of Singapore and Mr Yeo Chian Kwang Robert of Victoria Junior College. In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 19th out of 51 participating countries, sharing the position with India. The United States of America and South Korea were the top performing countries with 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal each.
4. At the 40th International Mathematical Olympiad, Lin Shaowei, Daniel Hue Yousi and Soh Chong Kian of Raffles Junior College, and Lim Yin of Victoria Junior College received bronze medals. The other team members were Lu Shang Yi and Kwa Chin Lum of Raffles Junior College. The delegation leaders were Dr Wong Yan Loi of the National University of Singapore and Mr Toh Tin Lam of St. Andrews´ Junior College. In terms of total score, Singapore was placed 36th out of 82 participating countries. China and Russia were the top performing countries with 4 gold medals and 2 silver medals each.
