RESIGNATION OF CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS
BOARD OF GOVERNORS, THE CHINESE HIGH SCHOOL
SCHOOL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE, HWA CHONG JUNIOR COLLEGE
The Chairman of the Board of Governors of The Chinese High School ("BOG") and the School Management Committee, Hwa Chong Junior College (the "HJC/SMC"), Mr Wee Ee Cheong, has resigned from the CHS/BOG and HJC/SMC. The Vice-Chairman and six other members have also resigned. The Minister for Education has noted this with regret.
In his reply to Mr Wee Ee Cheong, the Minister acknowledged the sense of duty which motivated Mr Wee to take up the challenging task of chairing the SMC and BOG for the benefit of the two schools. As Chairman, Mr Wee had shown much concern over the management of the two schools to ensure that they would continue to do well and to make good progress.
In June 1998, Minister for Education approved the appointments of 16 members to the CHS/BOG and the HJC/SMC on the basis that these persons would work substantially as a team. With the resignation of the Chairman as well as other members, including key office-bearers from the CHS/BOG and HJC/SMC, the basis for the Minister’s approval no longer subsists. The Minister has therefore withdrawn his approval for the appointments of remaining members of the CHS/BOG and HJC/SMC. These persons will hence cease to be members of the CHS/BOG and the HJC/SMC.
The Ministry would like to place on record its thanks to Mr Wee Ee Cheong and all members for the time and effort they have put in for the benefit of both educational institutions.
As the BOG and SMC of the schools are no longer able to carry out their functions, the Director-General of Education has invoked section 27(2) of the Education Act to appoint Committees of Management to oversee the operations of the two schools until the schools are able to manage themselves. They comprise three Senior Education Service Officers from the Ministry of Education The Chairman of both Committees will be Mrs Lim Soon Tze, Director of Schools. The other two members are Miss Ho Peng, Deputy Director, Schools Division, and Mr Tan Kiak Seng, Cluster Superintendent. Their appointments will take immediate effect.
