1. The Ministry of Education is organising the Educational Technology Conference and Exhibition 1999 (EdTech 99) from Tue 9 Feb to Thu 11 Feb 99 at the Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre. EdTech 99 will be opened by the Minister for Education, RAdm Teo Chee Hean.

2. The theme for this event, "Thinking Schools, Learning Nation - IT in Learning Organisations", emphasises the important role that IT plays in developing schools as learning organisations.

3. EdTech 99 will provide a platform for an exchange of ideas on current and future thinking on technology in education. Teachers will also be able to keep abreast of the latest developments in educational technology and enhance their teaching and learning methodology. Renowned speakers and IT experts from several countries will share their insights and knowledge on the use of technology in education. Our schools will also share their experiences from the various IT initiatives that have been launched in our institutions. About 1,900 school leaders, educators and overseas delegates from educational institutions will attend the Main Conference (9–10 Feb) while another 3,100 teachers will attend the Mini Conferences on 11 Feb.

4. The exhibition, which will run concurrently with the conference, aims to provide educators and the public with a wide range of IT resources and services to meet the changing needs of education. Co-organised by the Ministry of Education and Times Publishing Group, it will showcase the MOE (IT in Education) Pavilion, Activity Villages and latest products and services in educational technology (Annex A).

5. EdTech 99 is another milestone in the implementation of the Masterplan for IT in Education as it marks the start of Phase 3. In this final phase, the rest of our schools that have yet to come on board will integrate IT into the curriculum. Phase 1 started in 1997 and involved 22 schools. Phase 2 commenced in 1998 and involved about 100 schools.
