1998 SINGAPORE-CAMBRIDGE GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (NORMAL LEVEL) EXAMINATION

1 16,491 pupils in the Secondary 4 Normal Course sat the 1998 Singapore-Cambridge GCE Normal Level Examination in August/September this year. Of these, 10,797 pupils were from the Normal (Academic) Course and 5,694 pupils were from the Normal (Technical) Course. This is the second year that pupils from the Normal (Technical) Course sat the examination.

2 A certificate is awarded to a candidate who obtains a Grade 5 or better in at least one subject. 10,728 (99.4%) pupils from the Normal (Academic) Course and 5,563 (97.7%) pupils from the Normal (Technical) Course are awarded certificates in the 1998 examination.

3 Pupils in the Normal (Academic) Course who obtain an aggregate not exceeding 10 points in their 3 best subjects and a Grade 5 or better in English Language will be promoted to the Secondary 5 Normal Course in 1999. 8,169 pupils (75.7%) are eligible for promotion. Pupils who are not eligible to proceed to S5N and are also not eligible to repeat S4N in 1998 can apply to further their studies at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).

4 Pupils in the Normal (Technical) Course will proceed to the ITE for their post-secondary education, leading to the National Technical Certificate, Grade 2 (NTC-2). There will be no retention for Secondary 4 Normal (Technical) pupils. Those who are deemed to be able to benefit from an academic education, can proceed on to Secondary 5 Normal. For progression to the Secondary 5 Normal Course, pupils have to obtain a Grade 1 in English Language and Mathematics and a Grade 3 or better in a third subject, in one sitting. No pupil is eligible for S5N this year.

5 Of the 3,378 private candidates who sat the examination, 2,093 (62.0%) are awarded certificates.

6 School candidates have been issued with their results slips by their respective schools. Private candidates will be informed of their results by post. They can also obtain their results through the MOE website at http://www.moe.edu.sg after 2.30 p.m. from 4 Dec 98.
