NATIONAL HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CAMPAIGN 1998

ALL CHILDREN EXERCISING SIMULTANEOUSLY DAY

In conjunction with the 1998 National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign, the Ministry of Education has designated 31 Aug 98 as the All Children Exercising Simultaneously (ACES) Day. This activity, in which pupils participate as a group in an enjoyable and non-competitive activity, serves to promote physical activity and fitness.

2 From 1993 to 1995, pupils performed the Great Singapore Workout on ACES Day. Over the past two years, pupils exercised to a specially choreographed routine known as the "Fun and Fitness Workout". This year, schools, junior colleges and centralised institutes could either perform the ‘Fun & Fitness Workout’ or their own workout.

3 All medically fit pupils will perform the workout during the first fifteen minutes of the first period for the morning session or the last fifteen minutes of the last period for the afternoon session or as part of their Teachers’ Day celebration.

4 On this occasion, officials from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, and members of the National Healthy Lifestyle Civic Committee led by its Chairman, Mr Tan Kin Lian, will visit Townsville Primary School which has created a workout based on Social and Racial Harmony – a theme of National Education. The workout shows the characteristics of the four different races. Popular tunes selected by pupils from the four ethnic groups will be used. Parent volunteers have helped to train and familiarise pupils with the steps. To further strengthen the bond between the school and the community, parents have been invited to join in the ACES Day workout.
