THE SPECIAL ACADEMIC AWARDS PRESENTATION CEREMONY 1998
The 1988 Special Academic Awards Presentation Ceremony will be held at the Regional Language Centre Auditorium, Orange Grove Road on Fri 14 Aug 98. Mr Peter Chen, Senior Minister of State for Education will present the annual awards for the Prime Minister's Book Prize for bilingualism, the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science and the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship.
Prime Minister's Book Prize
2 The Prime Minister's Book Prize is an award for bilingualism and is presented annually to outstanding bilingual primary, secondary and pre-university students. The award is based on the students’ combined results in English Language/General Paper and the mother tongue, at the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) and the GCE 'O' Level Examination or the GCE 'A' Level Examination. The students’ overall performance in the other subjects is also taken into consideration in the selection of prize winners.
3 This year, a total of 33 pupils are awarded the Prime Minister's Book Prize - 12 in the Primary section, 14 in the Secondary section and seven in the Pre-University section. The names of the recipients are given at Annexes A1-3.
Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science
4 The Lee Kuan Yew Award which is given for excellence in Mathematics and Science was instituted in 1992. The awards are given under three categories - Secondary, Pre-University and Polytechnic. This year there are ten recipients, three in the Secondary category, three in the Pre-University category and four in the Polytechnic category with a recipient from each of the four polytechnics. The names of the recipients are given at Annexes B1-2.
5 The school winners are selected on the basis of their Mathematics and Science results in the GCE 'O' Level and the GCE 'A' Level Examinations. Their overall examination performance in the other subjects is also taken into consideration. Polytechnic winners are selected from among the top Technology & Computer Science graduates in each of the polytechnics. Their participation in extra-curricular activities related to Science and Mathematics is also considered.
Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship
6 The Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship awards are prestigious postgraduate scholarships for outstanding Singaporeans to pursue postgraduate studies in renowned universities. The objective of the scholarship is to further develop their potential as leaders in their chosen fields and the community. For 1998, out of 85 applicants, the two selected for the scholarship are Dr Chong Tsung Wen and Dr Goh Li Meng (Annex C).
7 Dr Chong Tsung Wen was awarded a Public Service Commission Local Merit Scholarship in 1982. He graduated from the National University of Singapore with an MBBS and a Master of Medicine (Surgery) in 1987 and 1993 respectively. He is currently a Senior Registrar at the Department of Urology, Singapore General Hospital and will pursue a Master of Science (Research) in Immuno-oncology at Oxford University.
8 Dr Goh Li Meng was awarded the President’s Scholarship in 1988. She graduated from the National University of Singapore with an MBBS (Hons) and a Master of Medicine (Paediatrics) in 1993 and 1996 respectively. She is currently a lecturer at the National University of Singapore. She will pursue a Master in Clinical Molecular Genetics at either the Harvard Medical School or the Cedar-Sinai Medical Centre in the United States.
