PERFORMANCE AT THE 1998 INTERNATIONAL CHEMISTRY, MATHEMATICAL AND PHYSICS OLYMPIADS
1 Singapore students participated in the following international Olympiads held in July 1998 :
30th International Chemistry Olympiad

29th International Physics Olympiad
Reykjavik, Iceland

International Chemistry Olympiad
2 At the 30th International Chemistry Olympiad, all four members of the team received awards. Quek Peng Lim, Timothy and Soo Han Sen of Raffles Junior College received Gold medals. Bong Ming Wei, Kevin and Chua Wee Kang of Raffles Junior College received Silver medals. The delegation leaders were Dr Leong Weng Kee of National University of Singapore and Mr Chua Kah Sheng of Raffles Junior College. In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 2nd out of 47 participating countries, sharing the position with Korea. Hungary was the top performing country. A total of 22 Golds, 40 Silvers, 58 Bronzes and 19 Special Certificates were awarded.
International Mathematical Olympiad
3 At the 39th International Mathematical Olympiad, all six members of the team received awards. Huah Cheng Jiann of Victoria Junior College received a Silver medal, and Yeo Keng Hee of Hwa Chong Junior College, Lin Shaowei and He Ruimin of Raffles Junior College received Bronze medals. Li Hong Yi of Raffles Junior College and Lim Yee Fun of Victoria Junior College were given Honourable Mentions. The delegation leaders were Dr Chua Seng Kiat of the National University of Singapore and Mr Lee Mun Yew of Raffles Junior College. In terms of total team score, Singapore was placed 22nd out of 76 participating countries. This is the first time that Singapore has made it to the top 30th percentile for the countries’ ranking. A total of 37 Golds, 67 Silvers, 102 Bronzes and 56 Honourable Mentions were awarded.
International Physics Olympiad
4 At the 29th International Physics Olympiad, three out of the five members of the team received awards. Ang Pet Chean of Hwa Chong Junior College, Koh Chern-Yen, Alvin of Raffles Junior College and Yong Ee Hou of Victoria Junior College received Honourable Mentions. Also in the delegation were Chan Joyce (Miss) of Hwa Chong Junior College and Kah Kong Jie of Victoria Junior College. The delegation was led by Dr Cheah Horn Mun of the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University and Mr Chia Ee Min, Elbert of Temasek Junior College. In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 27th out of 56 participating countries. A total of 11 Golds, 15 Silvers, 43 Bronzes and 55 Honourable Mentions were awarded.
