CHILDREN’S DAY 1998

All primary schools will celebrate Children’s Day on Wed, 30 Sept 98. The celebrations will include the singing of the National Anthem, school song and Children’s Day song and a reading of the Children’s Day message from Mr Mohamad Maidin Packer Mohd, Parliamentary Secretary (Education) and the Sharity Elephant’s Birthday message. Schools will organise a variety of activities including sports and games, concerts, food and fun fairs. Some schools have also invited pupils from special schools to join in their celebrations.

2 The primary schools will also observe "A Day of Charity" where principals will talk to pupils on the spirit of sharing and caring especially to the underprivileged. They will be encouraged to make donations to the Community Chest.

3 The Children’s Day Festival Committee comprising Ministry officials, members of the Singapore Primary Schools Sports Council, National Council of Social Services, Lions Club of Singapore, Singapore Teachers’ Union and Singapore Chinese Schools Conference, has also organised other activities to celebrate the occasion. These activities include visits to various welfare homes and special schools from 22 to 30 Sept.

Information on the activities of primary schools on 30 Sept 98 and the various organisations that some schools have visited is attached.

The celebrations include a Science Fair, lower primary sports session, traditional games (hop-scotch, 'chatek' and 'big-beilong') and performances by teachers and an act by a professional snake-charmer.

5 Gongshang Primary School

It will be a Children's Day Cum Science Day programme. The first part of the programme will be held in the school. The second part of the programme will be held at the SunPlaza Park (at the junction of Tampines Ave 7 and 9) from 8.10 am to 10.00 am. The programme includes the following:-

Art colouring competition and magic show at the Amphitheatre

Science Trail at the Sense Discovery Garden

Mathematics Trail at the Fitness Area

6 St Michael's School

St Michael's School will celebrate Children's Day on Sat 3 Oct 98 from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm with a grand carnival jointly organised with the Parent-Teacher Association. The theme of the programme is "My Favourite TV Character". Its highlight will be a dress-up competition in accordance with the theme. There will also be games and activities for the children such as face painting, balloon sculpting, photo-taking with a snake and a soccer match.

7 Zhangde Primary School

Parents and teachers will organise a food and fun fair and a jumble sale. They will be selling traditional food of the four races. A few of the game stalls will be devoted to traditional games like chaptek and ‘tapak kuda’.

Ten pupils from the Chao Yang Special School will be invited to the celebrations. Each of them will be assigned two Primary 5 buddies from Zhangde Primary who will be on hand to make it a special day for them. One of the objectives of this celebration is to allow the pupils to have a meaningful Children’s Day and to convey to pupils the National Education message of harmony through diversity besides raising pupils’ awareness of other pupils with special needs.
