INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC ADVISORY PANEL (IAAP)
In line with the objective of developing the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) as world-class centres of excellence in scholarship and research, the Government has established an International Academic Advisory Panel (IAAP) to advise the Government on the research direction and strategies which NUS and NTU should adopt and to provide up-to-date information on the major trends and directions in university education and research today. The IAAP will also help NUS and NTU link up with leading universities and research institutions world-wide, thereby facilitating collaboration in research, staff and student exchanges.
The IAAP, which will be chaired by Dr Yeo Ning Hong, Chairman of the Port of Singapore Authority, will include among its members the following eminent academics :

Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University

Dean of the School of Engineering Massachusetts, Institute of Technology
Prof Joseph Nye
Dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University
Prof Alec Broers
Vice-Chancellor, University of Cambridge
Sir Ronald Oxburgh
Rector, Imperial College
Prof Hans-Uwe Erichsen
President, Conference of Rectors and Presidents of the Tertiary Institutions of Germany (HRK)
President, European Conference of Rectors and Presidents of Tertiary Institutions.
Prof Antonio Borges
Dean of the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD)

The Inaugural Meeting of the IAAP will be held from the 6th to 9th August 1997 at the Shangri-La Hotel. During the Meeting, Panel members will visit NUS and NTU, meet Cabinet Ministers, and hold discussions with EDB, NSTB, and representatives from industry and the business community.

Prof William R Brody Was the Provost of the Academic
President, Johns Hopkins Medical Centre at the University of
University Minnesota from 1994 to 1996. Has
been appointed President of Johns
Hopkins University since 1996.
Prof Jeremy R Knowles Is a prominent figure in the field of
Dean of Faculty of Arts and Biochemistry. Was the co-recipient
Sciences of the Robert A. Welch Award in
Harvard University Chemistry which is awarded annually
to one or more scientists who have
made significant contributions in
basic chemistry with wide-reaching
benefits.
Prof Robert A Brown Is an expert in fluid mechanics,
Dean of the School of transport processes and numerical
Engineering methods. Has been the head of the
Massachusetts Institute of Department of Chemical Engineering,
Technology MIT since 1988. Has been appointed
Dean of the School of Engineering
since Jan 97.
Prof Joseph Nye An expert in the field of
Dean of the John F. Kennedy international security and has
School of Government written several well-known books in
Harvard University this area. Was the Assistant
Secretary of Defence for
International Security Affairs in the
Clinton Administration.
Prof Alec Broers Is a specialist in microelectronics
Vice-Chancellor and in the technologies used to
University of Cambridge fabricate integrated circuit chips.
Over the last few years, he has been
a member of a number of British
Government , EEC and NATO committees
and is presently a member of the UK
Engineering and Physics Science
Research Council, the Cabinet Office
Foresight Panel on Information
Technology and the NATO Special Panel
on Nanoscience.
Was Lee Kuan Yew Distinguished
Visitor.
Sir Ronald Oxburgh Specialises in geology and
Rector, Imperial College geophysics. Is a member of the Hong
Kong University Grants Committee. Has
been appointed in May 1996, to the
National Committee of Inquiry into
Higher Education, popularly known as
the Dearing Committee.
Prof Hans-Uwe Erichsen Is a Professor in Law. Has been
President, Conference of Rectors president of the European Conference
and Presidents of the Tertiary of Rectors and Presidents of Tertiary
Institutions of Germany (HRK); Institutions since 1996.
and
President, European Conference
of Rectors and Presidents of
Tertiary Institutions.
Prof Antonio Borges Was consultant to US Electric Power
Dean of the European Institute Research Institute, the US Treasury
of Business Administration Dept, the OECD & the Portuguese govt.
(INSEAD) Also worked at the European level on
the project of Economic & Monetary
Union, was member of European
Community's Monetary Committee.
Prof Dr Konrad Osterwalder The Swiss Federal Institute of
Rector and Vice President Swiss Technology Zurich is an institution
Federal Institute of Technology of the Swiss Confederation dedicated
Zurich to higher learning and research. It
Switzerland has a staff of some 6000 employees
and 11000 students who are working
towards degrees in Architecture,
Engineering, Maths and Science.
Prof Dr Osterwalder is a professor in
Maths.
Prof T Kimura Is a member of the Central Advisory
President, Tokyo Institute of Council on Education in Japan, and is
Technology currently Chairman of one of the
working committees looking at various
aspects of educational reform in
Japan. Also the President of the
Japanese University Accreditation
Association
Prof Leo Esaki Received the Nobel prize in Physics
President, University of Tsukuba in 1973. Was Lee Kuan Yew
Distinguished Visitor. His current
interest is centred on the reform and
internationalization of the Japanese
education system.
