1996 PSLE RESULTS

  1. This year, 42,798 Primary 6 pupils comprising 35,579 pupils from the EM1 and EM2 courses and 7,219 pupils from the EM3 course sat the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). In addition to Basic Mother Tongue, pupils in the EM3 course sat for two new subjects, Foundation English and Foundation Mathematics for the first time. These new papers, together with Basic Mother Tongue, cater more specifically to the needs and abilities of pupils in the EM3 course. Pupils in the EM1 and EM2 courses sat for the same subjects (English, Mathematics, Mother Tongue and Science) as in past examinations.
  2. In all, 40,870 pupils (or 95.5%) have been assessed as suitable to proceed to secondary school as compared to 94.2% in 1995; 58.9% are eligible for the Special or Express courses and 36.6% for the Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical) courses.
  3. There are 1,928 pupils (or 4.5%) who are assessed to be not yet ready for secondary school in 1997 or more suited for vocational training. Of these, 1,613 will be given another year in Primary 6 to consolidate their basic language and mathematics skills. The remaining 315, who are overaged, will be enrolled in basic vocational training courses offered by the Institute of Techncial Education.
