RESULTS OF SCHOOLS' PARTICIPATION IN 1996 INTERNATIONAL CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS AND MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIADS

  1. Singapore students participated in the 28th International Chemistry Olympiad held in Moscow, Russia from 12 - 23 July 1996, the 27th International Physics Olympiad in Oslo, Norway from 30 Jun - 7 July 1996 and the 37th International Mathematical Olympiad in Mumbai, India from 5 - 17 July 1996.
  2. International Chemistry Olympiad
    Tan Yen Shan, Serena, of Raffles Junior College was awarded a Gold medal at the 28th International Chemistry Olympiad. She is the only female participant to win a Gold medal in this year's Olympiad. Khoo Aik-Aun, David, of Raffles Junior College won a Silver medal, and Loh Zhi Heng of Raffles Junior College and Wee Tien Hsu, Jeremy, of Victoria Junior College won Bronze medals. This is the fifth successive year that our team won Gold medals at the International Chemistry Olympiad. In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 9th out of 45 participating countries.
  3. International Physics Olympiad
    In the 27th International Physics Olympiad, Koh Wai Kit of Victoria Junior College won a Silver medal and Lai Ghee Hwee of Raffles Junior College won a Bronze medal. In addition, Ang Chee Wee and Koong Hin Yeong of Raffles Junior College and Sze Wing Kay, William, of Victoria Junior College received Honourable Mentions. In terms of medals won, Singapore was placed 18th out of 57 participating countries.
  4. International Mathematical Olympiad
    Singapore also won medals at the 37th International Mathematical Olympiad. Thevendran Senkodan of Raffles Junior College won Singapore's first Gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Bronze medals were won by three students; Lim Yee Fun from Raffles Institution, Low Tzer Hung from Raffles Junior College and Pang Chin How, Jeffrey, from Hwa Chong Junior College. Singapore was ranked 25th out of 75 participating countries.
  5. The students for each Olympiad were selected and tutored by a team of lecturers from the National University of Singapore and teachers from the junior colleges.
  6. The team to each Olympiad was led by a lecturer from the National University of Singapore and a teacher from a junior college. The lists of student participants and delegation leaders for the Olympiads are given at Annexes I, II & III.
