HELPING DYSLEXIC CHILDREN

1. The Ministry of Education (MOE) is collaborating with the Dyslexia association of Singapore (DAS) to expand programmes to help dyslexic pupils in primary schools. There is a small proportion of pupils in out schools who are dyslexic. These pupils can be helped to maximise their potential if they are given appropriate assistance to overcome their learning disabilities.

2. DAS has already started a dyslexic centre in Clementi, catering to about 30 pupils. With assistance from MOE, DAS would be setting up another centre in the eastern sector along the same lines as Clementi Centre. The new centre will use the premises of Ping Yi Primary School, where special tuition classes will be conducted by the DAS after curriculum time. When functing at full capacity, the new centre can accommodate 160 pupils. Renovation work for the new centre is expected to begin soon.

3. MOE would be providing DAS with a start-up grant of up to $500,000 for the cost of rennovations for the new centre and initial assistance in covering its operating costs. Fees at existing rates will be charged by the association to enable the new centre to be self-financing once it is up to full capacity. However, MOE would provide needy pupils with financial assistance.

4. Pupils who are identified as severely dyslexic will be referred to DAS by MOE for remedial tuition ats its two centres by specialist teachers. Priority will be given to pupils most able to benefit from the special tuition.
