Learning Support For Mathematics

Name and Constituency of Member of Parliament

Mdm Halimah Yacob, Member of Parliamenet for Jurong JRC

Question

To ask the Minister for Education (a) whether the Learning Support for Maths programme for Primary One students who are weak in Maths is available in all schools; and (b) whether the Ministry has done any studies to assess the effectiveness of this programme.

Response

The Learning Support for Mathematics (LSM) was implemented in all primary schools in January 2007 to help Primary One students who lack foundation knowledge and skills in numeracy. The effectiveness of the LSM was reviewed in 2008. Based on the review and feedback from teachers, MOE developed an enhanced version which was more structured and contained detailed lesson plans and progress monitoring tools for teachers. The enhanced LSM was piloted in 51 schools in 2009 – 2010. MOE is currently reviewing the effectiveness of the enhanced LSM. We expect the review to be completed by end of 2010.
