Mr Hri Kumar Nair, MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC
Question
To ask the Minister for Education what steps are taken by the Ministry to ascertain that pupils are accepted by primary schools in accordance with the current registration scheme for Primary One admissions.
Response by Minister Ng Eng Hen
The annual Primary One Registration Exercise is conducted in accordance with a clearly defined set of criteria which is available on the MOE website.
Primary schools are required to verify and retain all necessary documents to ascertain a child’s eligibility for a particular phase. These documents may be checked by MOE which will take steps to rectify practices that are not in accordance with the Primary One Registration Framework. The registration forms also carry a reminder to parents and guardians that it is an offence to furnish false information to a public officer. Those found to have provided false information will be referred to the Police for investigation. A child who is successfully registered in a school based on false information will be transferred to another school with available vacancies after all eligible children have been registered.
These measures help ensure that primary school places are allocated in a transparent, fair and equitable manner.
