Taking up a scholarship is a considered decision

  1. We thank Mr Mervyn Sek for his views on the scholarship system (“Give scholars the chance to discover themselves”, 27/3).
  2. For students who have just completed their pre-university education and are considering undergraduate scholarships, the public sector offers a wide range of scholarships for consideration, in addition to various options open to our talents.
  3. Scholarship holders who accept an offer from an organisation are awarded those scholarships based on their demonstrated interest, ability and potential to serve in that organisation. For those who are still deciding on their future career path, there are options such as the Overseas Merit Scholarship (Open) or Local-Overseas Merit Scholarship (Open) available to them, which do not tie the recipient to serving a particular organisation.
  4. Accepting a Teaching Scholarship, as with any scholarship, is a considered decision and a commitment. As part of the process after accepting PSC's offer of a Teaching Scholarship, Mr Sek received induction and various other developmental opportunities to understand the role and expectations of a scholar serving in the Education Service, and in the wider Civil Service.
  5. We look forward to Mr Sek contributing to the Education Service after he completes his initial-teacher training course, and hope that he will put his acquired professional skills to good use during his career with MOE.
