No age limit for adjunct teachers
- We thank Mr Zheng Shu Li for his feedback on applying to be an adjunct teacher after his retirement (”Schools also practice age discrimination?“, ZB Forum, 30 Mar 07).
- The Adjunct Teachers Programme was introduced in September 2004 to attract teachers who have left to rejoin the teaching profession. There is no age limit, as long as they are medically and physically fit to contribute effectively as a teacher. Since the launch of the programme, close to 2000 adjunct teachers have been engaged. Almost half of them are aged 60 and above, with the oldest being 75.
- Those who wish to become adjunct teachers can register with the Ministry of Education (MOE). Their particulars are then placed in a central system which can be accessed by all schools. Schools choose the adjunct teachers and determine the periods of engagement based on their needs and the candidatesí subject expertise. Continued employment is subject to good performance.
- Retired teachers like Mr Zheng are welcome to apply to be Adjunct teachers. Interested applicants can apply online at the Relief Teacher Online Registration website.
