Language Elective Scholarships (Malay)

The Language Elective Scholarships (MLES) for the study of Malay at H2 Level are offered by the Ministry of Education to encourage academically able and linguistically talented students to pursue the Malay language course at H2 Level under the Malay Language Elective Programme (MLEP). It aims to nurture the language talent of students who have an aptitude for Malay Language so that they can attain a higher level of proficiency and a better understanding of Malay Language and Literature. It also allows academically able students to become effectively bilingual. The MLEP and the MLES are offered at the following centres:

Non-IP Applicants (excluding Non-IP DSA Applicants)

No applications are required for the MLES. All eligible students admitted to the MLEP during the Joint Admissions Exercise will be considered for the scholarships. If shortlisted for interviews, these students will need to submit a 1 page typewritten essay (font size: 12, single line spacing) briefly describing themselves, and why they wish to apply for this scholarship.

Non-IP Applicants (Non-IP DSA Applicants)

Applications for Non-IP DSA students will open after the official release of the 2008 GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations results. Non-IP DSA applicants may apply for the MLES using their 2008 GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations results. Application forms and details on application process, will be available after the official release of the 2008 GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations results. Selection for Scholarship Awards for Non-IP Applicants

Selection of Non-IP applicants (including DSA applicants) for the scholarships will be based on performance in their 2008 GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations and their performance at the selection interview which will be conducted in March/April 2009.

Results of the scholarship selection will be announced by April 2009.

Terms & Conditions

The scholarship is valued at $1,000 per annum and covers school fees based on Singapore Citizens’ rates. It is tenable for 2 years, subject to satisfactory progress at the end of JC1. Successful applicants are not required to enter into a bond to serve the Singapore Government

Successful applicants must offer Malay at H2 level. However, there is no restriction on the choice of the remaining subjects for their ‘A’ Level course. Scholars are encouraged to take 4 H2 Level subjects (inclusive of Malay). Their choice of the other 3 H2 Level subjects should preferably be relevant to their proposed courses of study at undergraduate level.
