School Placement: Junior Colleges and Millennia Institute

Overview

Returning Singaporeans who wish to pursue the pre-university course in a JC/MI should take note that the pre-university course is an intensive and rigorous course and only those who have been assessed to be suitable for the course will be offered a place. Given the recent introduction of compulsory subjects like Project Work (for which grading takes place throughout the year for each academic year), returning Singaporeans should seek admission to JC/MI as early as possible, by early April of the academic year of admission. After April, returning Singaporeans who are still keen to seek admission to JC/MI are encouraged to do so under the immersion scheme for the remaining of that academic year and seek admission to the following academic year.

Returning Singaporeans seeking Junior College / Millennia Institute admission generally fall into the following groups:

  1. Junior College / Millennia Institute admission for Returning Singaporeans on Leave of Absence Scheme (LOA)
  2. Junior College / Millennia Institute admission for Returning Singaporeans not on Leave of Absence Scheme (LOA)

Junior College / Millennia Institute Admission for Returning Singaporeans on Leave of Absence Scheme (LOA)

Returning Singaporeans who have a place in a Junior College / Millennia Institute under the LOA scheme can rejoin their former schools immediately upon their return.

Junior College / Millennia Institute admission for Returning Singaporeans Not on Leave of Absence Scheme (LOA)

Returning Singaporeans who are not on the Leave of Absence Scheme (LOA) may participate in special school placement exercises, such as School Placement Exercise for Returning Singaporeans for admission to Junior Colleges and Millennia Institute (SPERS-JC/MI) and the Direct School Admission exercise for junior colleges (DSA-JC). Alternatively, Returning Singaporeans can apply to their preferred JC/MI directly for admission under General School Placement.

School Placement for Returning Singaporeans - Junior Colleges / Millennia Institute (SPERS-JC/MI)

SPERS-JC/MI is a centralised placement exercise conducted at the end of the year for Returning Singaporeans who wish to join the Pre-University 1 level at the beginning of the next academic year.

As admission to JC/MI is merit-based, Returning Singaporeans who wish to participate in SPERS-JC/MI will be required to sit for SPERS-JC/MI papers comprising English, Mathematics and General Ability papers. Based on their performance in the SPERS-JC/MI papers, successful applicants will be provided with a list of institutions where students with similar abilities are already studying. Applicants may then approach any of the JCs / MI on their list to apply for admission.

Direct School Admission - Junior Colleges

Returning Singaporeans may also seek admission by participating in the Direct School Admission exercise for junior colleges (DSA-JC). Under this exercise, JCs have greater flexibility in selecting students using their own school-based criteria. For application procedures and more information, please refer to the DSA-JC website.

General School Placement

Returning Singaporeans who are unable to participate in the School Placement Exercise for Returning Singaporeans — Junior College / Millennia Institute (SPERS-JC/MI) or Direct School Admission exercise — Junior College (DSA-JC), may approach their preferred JC/MI directly to apply for admission. The JC/MI may conduct school-based assessment tests to assess the Returning Singaporeans’ suitability for admission. Admission is subject to the availability of vacancies and the applicants meeting the schools’ admission criteria. Applicants can choose any course/subject combination offered by the JC/MI approached, provided they meet the subject pre-requisites (e.g. A Maths for H2 Maths). Applicants without the subject prerequisites for the course/subject combinations may be further assessed by the JC/MI.
