Instead of going for a holiday trip, I decided to use my June
break for a Teacher Work Attachment (TWA). I was attached to
the Teachers Work Attachment Unit at Teachers Network from 6
to 22 June 2005.
It was a very fruitful time as I learnt how policies formulated
at the HQ level are implemented in schools. I had an opportunity
to attend meetings and observe how the TWA team liaised with
external organisations to secure attachment places for teachers.
These organisations included the Singapore American School,
the Australian International School, the Overseas Family School,
NUS Enterprise and IPAC Financial Planning (S) Pte Ltd. I observed
that these organisations were very supportive and eager to offer
attachment places. Some even wanted teachers to provide feedback
on their programmes.
I was involved in exciting projects such as enhancing and proposing
publicity materials to advertise the services of Teachers Network
as well as the Teacher Work Attachment. I was also involved
in doing a feasibility study to make TWA more attractive to
teachers. Last but not least, I had many opportunities to interact
with the Deputy Director, Assistant Director and Professional
Development Officers. They were very warm and helpful. Though
the attachment was short, it was definitely time well-spent.
The most exciting part was when we went to Bukit Timah Nature
Reserve to get inspiration and ideas for a coming conference.
The nature reserve supports a wide variety of flora and fauna,
with each depending on one another for the sustainability of
the ecosystem. Likewise, the conference can be a forest of innovative
and exciting ideas, good practices and pedagogies where educators
can tap into these practices, modify and enhance them to effect
an exciting change in their classroom teaching.
I felt refreshed and looked forward to going back to my school
to apply what I had learnt in HQ!
