MISSION & VISION

MAIN THRUST

1.

To continue SNYO’s quest for excellence, built on the best training available and sound management.

2. To increase the visibility and improve the profile of SNYO as a national youth orchestra.
3.

To promote the reputation of SNYO abroad and to win new friends overseas.

4.

To continue to develop sustained community support from parents, school principals, musicians, SNYO tutors and the public.

5.

To promote SNYO as an educational body within S21.

6.

To develop audiences from a young age, contributing to a broader appreciation of the arts and to the vibrancy of the environment.

MISSION

Our priorities are our youth and their music. Within this broad framework, the aim of the SNYO is to provide each student exemplary orchestral experience and the highest quality professional music education and training, as part of the holistic approach to our education system – to inspire and nurture career-minded musicians, enthusiastic amateurs and dedicated music-lovers.

VISION
To be an orchestra where each student is encouraged and inspired in a challenging and supportive environment, to pursue the highest standards he can attain in the performance of music, and enjoy the pleasure of music whether as a performer or listener.

STRATEGIES

1

Investing in our musicians
Investing in people is a key strategy for business success in the new millennium. This is also true for orchestras.    Investing in our talented young musicians will be a key strategy for achieving excellence from the Singapore National Youth Orchestra. We continue to invest time, energy and money, in our musicians.

2

Being a catalyst
We encourage each member of the SNYO to have his or her personal dreams, and guide and support that member in his or her actions in pursuing those dreams.

3

Adding value
We aim to enhance the musical competencies of every member so that he leaves the SNYO a better musician.

4

Building useful links for our musicians
We pursue partnerships with national and international arts organisations and individuals so as to facilitate interaction between our members and renowned bodies and artists both locally and abroad. As part of their education, we hope to be able to give our members a glimpse of the life of a musician, as well as what it takes to get ahead as a musician –being able to deal with the music as well as the professional aspects of music as a career. We hope to provide our musicians to have at least one opportunity to go on tour during their membership with SNYO.

5

Instilling in members a lifelong love for music
We encourage our members to cultivate a lifelong love for music, whatever the career paths chosen by them may be. Whilst many members of the SNYO may become professional musicians, still many more pursue careers unrelated to the arts and assume major leadership roles in their fields, whilst remaining dedicated audiences.

6

Winning lasting community support
We want to win lasting community engagement, because family support, school support, professional support, and community support are all vital components in the success of the SNYO. We also encourage and welcome everyone, whether a first-time listener or a seasoned concertgoer, to experience the magic of our youth orchestra.

7

21st century management
We want to build an organisation that will help SNYO meet the challenges facing them in the 21st century. We want to work towards uniting and motivating each component of the orchestra, progressing towards a shared institutional vision, so as to be a high performance organisation, where every facet of the organisation operates at its highest level, with capable inspired leadership, supported by the Board, the Ministry, and the community.

ORGANISATION

MAIN ORCHESTRA
The main orchestra gives at least three major public performances annually in March, July and December. In addition it promotes appreciation of orchestral music in schools. The minimum age requirement to join the orchestra is 11 and the maximum age is 25. Young adult members above 25 make up the Alumni. The present size of the main orchestra is 85. The members of SNYO come from primary schools, secondary schools, junior colleges, polytechnics, international schools and the National University of Singapore.

SNYO first concert for this year entitled "Poet and Peasant" is on 19th March 2005 held at Victoria Concert Hall. Tickets are available at SISTIC outlets.

TRAINING ORCHESTRA (SNYTO)
Besides the main orchestra, the SNYO has four training ensembles: strings, winds, brass and percussion. The members in these groups are exposed to ensemble music before attempting the more complex orchestra repertoire. The SNYTO is often given opportunities to perform. They also have a music outreach programme for schools and the community.

AUDITIONS and CRITERIA FOR MEMBERSHIP
The SNYO conducts three auditions a year to recruit members. All applicants have to audition for membership. They are required to play two contrasting pieces. Competition is keen and only very competent and talented students are accepted. The end result is an orchestra, which exhibits a high level of performance skills.

The SNYO offers two levels of membership:
1    Performing member
2    Trainee member

Please download SNYO audition guidelines and application form.

TRAINEES
These are members who show potential but have yet to master their instrument. A trainee receives instrumental tuition under the SNYO Individual Training Scheme (see below). Their progress is closely monitored and there is an 18-month probation period.

INDIVIDUAL TRAINING SCHEME
The Individual Training Scheme has helped many young talents to master instrumental techniques and musicianship under the tutelage of professional musicians from the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. The Ministry of Education under the Scheme pays for the weekly one-hour lessons. To date there are 100 members on the Individual Training Scheme.

ASSESSMENT
Members are required to undergo assessment when they join the Individual Training Scheme. The objective is to monitor the progress of each member. Members who are found to be competent and who have shown good progress will qualify for a place in the main orchestra; similarly, a trainee will qualify to join the training ensemble.
Group Assessments include solo/chamber recitals by members.

SNYO OUTREACH

The objectives of the SNYO Outreach concerts are:

  • To provide a platform for the SNYTO to perform;

  • To introduce western classical music as well as compositions by Singapore composers to schools;

  • To recruit members;

  • To share the gift of music with the less fortunate through community concerts.

The training orchestra gives two informal public concerts a year - in May & December
