Chinese Entrance Proficiency Test
The Chinese Entrance Proficiency Test is applicable for candidates applying to teach Chinese Language.
The test comprises 2 parts:
- Part 1 involves a test of oral proficiency: it requires candidates to read a passage aloud and deliver a short speech without notes on a given topic. Candidates will be given a few minutes to preview the reading passage and to prepare for the talk.
- Part 2 requires candidates to take a listening comprehension test. This is followed by a test of knowledge in grammar, vocabulary usage and stylistic features of the language. Candidates will also be tested on reading comprehension.
Exemption Criteria
Candidates who fulfill any of the criteria below are exempted from the Chinese EPT.
- Honours degree / Pass degree graduates or final year undergraduates in Chinese Language / Literature from Nanyang University, UniSIM or any university in the PRC and Taiwan or
- Honours degree / Pass with merit / Pass degree graduates or final year undergraduates in Chinese Studies or Chinese Language from NTU, NUS or University of Malaya or
- Applicants who scored an ‘A’ Level pass with at least a Grade C in Higher Chinese (formerly known as CL1) or at least a Grade B in Chinese (formerly known as CL2) in the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination or
- Applicants who scored at least a Grade B in H2 Chinese Language and Literature in the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination or
- Applicants who scored at least a Grade B4 / B in CL1 at CUE / UEC respectively or
- Applicants who scored at least a pass in CL at Junior Middle Three Level from the PRC or Taiwan or
- Applicants who scored at least a Grade B in CL at STPM or
- Applicants who scored at least a Grade A2 in Higher Chinese (formerly known as CL1) in the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination or
- Applicants who scored at least a Grade 5 in Chinese in the International Baccalaureate Examination.

If you are not exempted from the EPT, you are strongly encouraged to register through the RELC Examinations Bureau on-line registration service.
The registration fees are non-refundable. No refund of payment will be given to candidates who have registered but did not sit for or who withdrew from the test.
After your payment has been made, you will receive an official receipt. Applicants will be scheduled to sit for the EPT on the next earliest available test date. Notification of test dates, time and venue will be sent to applicants 1 to 2 weeks prior to the test.
