Gongshang Primary School -

Nurturing ‘Entrepreneurs with a Heart’

One of the cornerstones of a primary school education in Gongshang Primary School is founded on values. We believe that while skills and attitudes related to innovation and enterprise (I&E) should be imparted to our pupils to prepare them for a rapidly changing world, the spirit of I&E should be grounded in a set of time-honoured values of integrity, social responsibility and respect for others. These values will serve as guiding principles for our students as they navigate life’s choices.

Bearing this in mind and the knowledge that I&E should not be a programme in isolation, the teachers have incorporated I&E into our Project Work (PW) programme. The entire programme involved pupils from P2 to P6 and took more than a year to complete.

The teachers have chosen to work with the Zoo to save wild tigers in Southeast Asia for this project. The proceeds from the Project Work products will be channelled to the ‘Save the Tigers’ fund which may be used to relocate the villagers living near the tigers’ habitats, or to educate the public against purchasing tiger parts for consumption. In this way, the pupils and teachers feel a real sense of purpose in the work they are doing, and they can feel a sense of pride at having contributed to society.

As part of their Project Work, Primary 3 and 4 pupils conducted research on a chosen animal and wrote poems based on their findings. These poems are compiled into an anthology of poems. The colourful illustrations were drawn by the Primary 2 students.

Primary 5 pupils designed labels that were printed on bottles of oxygenated water. The green background represents the environment and the commitment of our pupils to protect it, the heart in the foreground represents our budding “entrepreneurs with a heart”, while the paw prints present the cause they are supporting – Saving the Tigers.

The Primary 6 pupils took part in the school’s annual Entrepreneurz Bazaar and raised funds for the tigers by selling handicrafts, goods and services to their fellow schoolmates. They managed to raise more than $4000 from the Bazaar in a day.

One Primary 6 student, Jemima Wei, took this opportunity to display her enterprising flair. Sympathetic to the tigers’ plight, she contacted several private companies to enlist their help in supporting the school’s cause to save the tigers. Some of these companies sponsored merchandise for her team to sell during the Bazaar. Combustor Airmotive Services Pte Ltd even donated $500 to the Zoo for the fund.

On 13th and 14th November, Jemima and her team set up a stall at the Entrepreneurs’ Fair at Tampines Mall to sell sponsored products, hand-made accessories, as well as the poem books and bottles of oxygenated water. Their effort helped raise another $2000 for the tigers.

The hard work put in by the pupils and teachers culminated in the finale at the zoo where 400 Primary 6 pupils witnessed the cheque presentation of $4000 towards the fund. This is the first instalment of the contribution from the school as the project continues into another year.
